The office phone rings. He lays the portrait securely on top of his desk, before answering. The voice in the phone states, “Requesting DEA presence at the corner of Main and Broadway.” Bascombe, picks his brother’s portrait off his desk, and hangs it securely on the wall. He throws on his jacket over his strapped two semiautomatics and heads out, hitting the streets. Bascombe, pulls up on Broadway and waits. A red Monte Carlo is parked on Main. A rugged looking, Hispanic Man, in his mid thirties, comes out of the high rise office building on Broadway. He’s carrying an attaché case. Bascombe, gets out of his car in a calculated pursuit. The Man gets inside the hot rod. Bascome, on foot, is catching up to him. The Man attempts to stick the key into the ignition. Bascombe, sticks his left hand through the driver’s window, grabbing at the keys. Bascombe, fails to grab the keys, but the suspect rolls up the electronic window, putting Bascombe’s hand in a vice. The car takes off. Bascombe tries to keep pace with the speeding car. The Man looks at Bascombe’s trapped hand and laughs hysterically. The Monte Carlo turns a corner, throwing Bascombe’s body onto the hood. His hand is still fastened. He manages to viciously shoot at the suspect through the windshield using his other hand, at suspect. An on-coming tractor trailer honks, as it closes in on the Monte-Carlo, now zig zagging over the yellow line. Before the trailer could clip Bascombe, the Man shoots at Bascombe’s trapped hand and blows out the driver’s side window. Bascombe is thrown free onto the sidewalk. The car slams into a telephone pole. The man crawls out on the passenger side, bloodied and shaken up, yet, he escapes on foot. The trailer proceeds, regardless. Bascombe, incurs several lacerations to his face, head, along with minor bruises over some parts of his body. In pain, he gets up, puts two fingers in his mouth and whistles in an attempt to stop an oncoming taxi cab. His whistle is inaudible. The cab passes him by. Moments later, an ambulance arrives and whisks him away. |
